Taste of the Revolution: Pickling & Fermenting for All Ages In-Person
Enjoy a taste of the revolution as we explore the use of salt for pickling and fermentation in Colonial times and today. Learn how and what to pickle for your holiday feasts!
Join us for a presentation and workshop on salt’s power in preserving food. We’ll learn some science, demonstrate techniques, share recipes, and try some hands-on pickling. Then we'll enjoy samples of locally made pickled and fermented treats.
In connection with Salisbury READS Revolution Song, we’ll serve a side dish of 1770’s history about the importance of salt to colonial-era travel, exploration, colonization, expansion, and trade, and how the British blockade of salt sparked a new New England industry!
We’ll also talk about the current day “fermentation revolution,” which is reviving old traditions with new knowledge about fermentation’s health benefits.
Registration is requested (so we know how many delicious pickles and fermented veggies to supply!). Please scroll down and use the button below to register.
What is Salisbury READS?
Initiated in 2024, the Salisbury READS is an annual celebration of reading, conversation, and community. The READ encourages the entire community to read a selected book together and engage in discussions, activities, and other informative and interactive events. This year’s READ is presented in partnership with the Salisbury Association, the Salisbury Forum, and the Troutbeck Symposium.
