Artists Books: History and Creation with May Castleberry

Artists Books: History and Creation with May Castleberry In-Person

Join us for this unique chance to explore artists books and their history with expert May Castleberry, a former editor and book producer for MOMA and the Whitney Museum. We'll learn about selected books that have defined this field, see what makes them unique, and hear about the collaborations that brought them into being.

May will guide us through key moments in the history of the book as an artistic medium – one in which images, text, design, typography, and all elements of the book are intended to come together as a unified work. We’ll end with a display of selected books and a chance to examine them up-close and ask questions.

May Castleberry served from 2000 to 2024 as editor of the Contemporary Editions series published by the Library Council of The Museum of Modern Art. Between 1984 and 2000, she was librarian at the Whitney Museum as well as editor of a series of limited-edition artists books that brought together original art and new writing. She also organized exhibitions at the Whitney and at MoMA on photography and the history of the book. She lives in Lakeville and works several days each week in New York City.
