Pet Portrait: A Drawing Workshop with Artist Hilary Cooper

Pet Portrait: A Drawing Workshop with Artist Hilary Cooper In-Person

Join artist Hilary Cooper for a pet portrait drawing workshop.

Beneath all that cuteness, your pet's lovely face has structure. In this workshop, we'll discuss how to recognize and keep structural and anatomical points in mind as you draw, and you'll learn how to work from a photograph to develop a fully rendered likeness of your pet.

Bring a few photos of your chosen subject to give yourself a range to choose from. Consider photos that show different poses or different expressions, that provide good contrast of light and dark, for example.

Drawing paper and conte crayons will be provided. You may also bring your own materials if you like.

Registration is required for this limited enrollment workshop. Please use the link below to register.

This series is made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Scoville Library.

Hilary Cooper’s portraits are grounded in traditional classical training but with a more modernist and vibrant handling of color, line and brushstroke. Her influences range from Goya to Alice Neel. Her works are paintings as much as portraits.

The child of foreign service officers, Hilary grew up abroad. Formative years were spent gazing at portraits in England’s National Portrait Gallery. Later she spent a semester soaking up the contemporary art scene at Goldsmiths College, University of London. In the U.S., she attended Oldfields School, Mount Holyoke College, the Art Students League and National Academy.

Her work has been widely exhibited. In particular, her project Divided Portraits: Identity and Disability toured the country and resulted in a book of the same title. For more information, please visit HilaryCooper.com.
