POSTPONED Native Meadow Walk & Talk: Explore Vincent Preserve with Michael Nadeau, presented by the Salisbury Association Land Trust

POSTPONED Native Meadow Walk & Talk: Explore Vincent Preserve with Michael Nadeau, presented by the Salisbury Association Land Trust In-Person

This presentation has been postponed due to illness. We hope to rescheduled date later in the fall.

Learn about creating a meadow with native grasses and wild flowers!

The Salisbury Association Land Trust presents a talk by Michael Nadeau on the transformation of the Vincent Preserve to a native species meadow. The talk will be followed a walk to the preserve to learn more from Mike as we explore what is growing there now and what the future may hold.

Join us in the Scoville Library's Wardell Room (parking behind the library) for the talk. Then we'll walk to the Vincent Preserve, located on the south side of Main Street, about a half-mile west of the library.

The Vincent Preserve  was donated to the Salisbury Association Land Trust in 2006 by George and Virginia Vincent. During the summer of 2022, the Land Trust, with support from members of the community, began work to establish this parcel as a native meadow.

Using an organic process, existing vegetation and invasive species were removed leaving the field as close to a blank slate as possible. Then a seed mix consisting of over 30 native flower and grass species chosen for this site was applied. The meadow planting is designed to evolve as well as to occupy all niches with dense vegetation both above and below ground in order to resist incursion by invasives.

The meadow not only adds beauty to the community; the plants, native to our area but now scarce, provide important sustenance and habitat for a wide array of pollinators, birds, and animals.

With over thirty years or experience in organic landscaping, Michael Nadeau is a leading authority on sustainable organic and ethical land care strategies. Nadeau helped develop both the New England Organic Farming Association’s Standards for Organic Land and Lawn Care, and the NOFA Organic Lawn and Turf Course Manual, the only 100% organic manual for the care of athletic fields and home lawns. He is a published writer on subjects including ecological, sustainable, and organic land-care topics.
