Book Discussion with Project SAGE: Demon Copperhead, by Barbara Kingsolver In-Person
Whether you read the novel last year, last week, or you're just reading it right now, this community conversation is a chance to talk about the book, its characters, and the issues it raises, and also to reflect on our own community's needs and the resources available to support our community.
Join the staff of Project SAGE for a book-club-style discussion of the novel Demon Copperhead, by Barbara Kingsolver.
About the book
A Pulitzer Prize winner and New York Times bestseller, set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relaying his story in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses. Through all of it, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities.
Equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking, this is the story of an irrepressible boy nobody wants, but readers will love.
-- Ron Charles, Washington Post
Discussion will be led by Project SAGE staff including Linda Ciana, Director of Community Engagement.
Extra copies of the book will be available for reference during the discussion.
