Knitting Workshop with Bruce Weinstein: Easy Slip Stitch Color Patterns

Knitting Workshop with Bruce Weinstein: Easy Slip Stitch Color Patterns In-Person

In this workshop with knitting instructor Bruce Weinstein, we will explore color-work by changing colors every row or every other row. Once we learn how to create different fabrics with the slipped stitch technique, we can talk about how to translate these into useful patterns like scarfs and shawl, throws, and table runners, even sweaters.

Bruce Weinstein, a local knitting expert and knitwear designer (also a trained chef, cookbook author, and culinary columnist), is the author of Knits Men Want and Boyfriend Sweaters, as well as 37 published cookbooks. To learn more, please visit his website.

Some knitting experience is required for participants in this workshop. Please take note of the supplies you will need for each session.

Registration automatically enrolls you in the whole series. Registration will stay open until the last session.

This series is made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Scoville Library.

Easy Color Knitting with Slipped Stitches

Slipping stitches is the easiest technique in the knitting arsenal for creating color work. But slipping stitches comes with a price—tight, thick, dense fabric. One way around the extra tightness of slipped stitch knitting is to use larger-than-usual needles for any given yarn. So please bring a wide range of needles to class as we’re going to play around with gauge and needle size to see how those alter our fabric.

Week 1, January 7th:  Tri-Color Linen

The classic linen stitch is a marvelous way to add texture to a scarf or blanket by slipping every other stitch on every row. But change color every row as well, and the results are magical.

Please bring three different colors in the same DK weight yarn. Bring a range of needles from the size recommended on the yarn band up to four sizes larger.

Week 2, January 14th: Slipped Stitch Gingham

By keeping colors within a chromatic family and using slipped stitches, we can create a checked pattern that leans almost towards plaid.

Please bring three different colors in the same DK weight yarn. Bring a range of needles from the size recommended on the yarn band up to four sizes larger.

Week 3, January 21st: Two-Toned Lattice

Soft and stretchy, this two-color slipped stitch pattern requires yarn with great stitch definition.

Bring two different colors in the same DK or light worsted weight yarn. Bring a range of needles from the size recommended on the yarn band up to four sizes larger. If desired, one of these yarns can be self striping, but one should be solid.
